Very Strong TeV Emission as Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows
نویسنده
چکیده
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and following afterglows are considered to be produced by dissipation of kinetic energy of a relativistic fireball and radiation process is widely believed as synchrotron radiation or inverse Compton scattering of electrons. We argue that the transfer of kinetic energy of ejecta into electrons may be inefficient process and hence the total energy released by a GRB event is much larger than that emitted in soft gamma-rays, by a factor of ∼ (mp/me). We show that, in this case, very strong emission of TeV gamma-rays is possible due to synchrotron radiation of protons accelerated up to ∼ 10 eV, which are trapped in the magnetic field of afterglow shock and radiate their energy on an observational time scale of ∼ day. This suggests a possibility that GRBs are most energetic in TeV range and such TeV gamma-rays may be detectable from GRBs even at cosmological distances, i.e., z ∼ 1, by currently working ground-based telescopes. Furthermore, this model gives a quantitative explanation for the famous long-duration GeV photons detected from GRB940217. If TeV gamma-ray emission which is much more energetic than GRB photons is detected, it provides a strong evidence for acceleration of protons up to ∼ 10 eV. GeV-TeV and X-ray flares from gamma-ray bursts
The recent detection of delayed X-ray flares during the afterglow phase of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) suggests an inner-engine origin, at radii inside the deceleration radius characterizing the beginning of the forward shock afterglow emission. Given the observed temporal overlapping between the flares and afterglows, there must be inverse Compton (IC) emission arising from such flare photons scat...
متن کاملSome recent developments in gamma - ray burst afterglow and prompt emission models 1
Extensive observational campaigns of afterglow hunting have greatly enriched our understanding of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) phenomenon. Efforts have been made recently to explore some afterglow properties or signatures that will be tested by the on-going or the future observational campaigns yet come. These include the properties of GRB early afterglows in the temporal domain; the GeV-TeV after...
متن کاملDoes regenerated emission change the high-energy signal from gamma-ray burst afterglows?
We study regenerated high-energy emission from the gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, and compare its flux with the direct component from the same afterglow. When the intrinsic emission spectrum extends to TeV region, these very high-energy photons are significantly absorbed by the cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation field, creating electron/positron pairs; since these pairs are highly en...
متن کاملThe Expected Rate of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows In Supernova Searches
We predict the rate at which Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows should be detected in supernova searches as a function of limiting flux. Although GRB afterglows are rarer than supernovae, they are detectable at greater distances because of their higher intrinsic luminosity. Assuming that GRBs trace the cosmic star formation history and that every GRB gives rise to a bright afterglow, we find that...
متن کاملA Standard Kinetic Energy Reservoir in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows
We present a comprehensive sample of X-ray observations of 41 γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, as well as jet opening angles, θj for a subset with measured jet breaks. We show that there is a significant dispersion in the X-ray fluxes, and hence isotropic X-ray luminosities (LX,iso), normalized to t = 10 hr. However, there is a strong correlation between LX,iso and the beaming fractions, fb ≡ [1 −...
